  3. Notes on upgrading to MS-DOS 6

  6. If you have OS/2 on your computer, and the MICROSOFT
  7. MS-DOS 6 USER'S GUIDE referred you to the OS2.TXT
  8. file, carry out the following procedure that corresponds
  9. to your computer's configuration. 
  10.  
  11. If You Have Neither OS/2 Dual Boot Nor OS/2 Boot Manager
  12. --------------------------------------------------------
  13. If you want to remove OS/2 from your computer but want 
  14. to save the data on your hard disk first, carry out the 
  15. following procedure:
  16.  
  17. To remove OS/2 and save the data on your computer:
  18.  
  19. 1. Restart your computer using OS/2.
  20.  
  21. 2. Back up the data files you want to keep onto floppy 
  22.    disks by using the COPY command.
  23.  
  24.    CAUTION Do not remove OS/2 system files from your hard disk.
  25.  
  26. 3. Reinsert Setup Disk 1 in drive A (the startup drive).
  27.  
  28. 4. Restart your computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
  29.  
  30. 5. When Setup displays the screen about a non-MS-DOS partition
  31.    or non-MS-DOS files, choose to remove the partition or files.
  32.  
  33. 6. After you finish setting up MS-DOS, copy the data files 
  34.    you saved in step 2 from the floppy disks back to your 
  35.    hard disk.
  36.  
  37. If You Have OS/2 Dual Boot with DOS or OS/2 Boot Manager
  38. with DOS
  39. --------------------------------------------------------
  40. When Setup detects OS/2, it displays a "Non-MS-DOS Partition 
  41. Detected" or "OS/2 Files Detected" screen. If Setup 
  42. displayed the "Non-MS-DOS Partition Detected" screen, carry out
  43. Procedure 1. If Setup displayed the "OS/2 Files Detected"
  44. screen, carry out Procedure 2.
  45.  
  46. Procedure 1  To remove OS/2 and save the data on your 
  47. computer:
  48.  
  49. 1. When Setup displays the "Non-MS-DOS Partition Detected" 
  50.    screen, choose the "Continue Setup" option.
  51.  
  52. 2. After you set up MS-DOS 6, make sure you can access 
  53.    your hard disk.
  54.  
  55. 3. Back up the data files you want to keep onto floppy 
  56.    disks or a network drive.
  57.  
  58. 4. See "Using Fdisk to Configure Your Hard Disk" in the chapter 
  59.    "Diagnosing and Solving Problems," and carry out all the procedures 
  60.    that appear in the following sections:
  61.  
  62.    o "Making a Startup Disk"
  63.  
  64.    o "Using Fdisk"
  65.  
  66.    o "Deleting Non-MS-DOS Partitions"
  67.  
  68.    o "Deleting Logical Drives"
  69.  
  70.    o "Deleting an Extended MS-DOS Partition"
  71.  
  72.    o "Creating a Primary MS-DOS Partition"
  73.  
  74.    o "Formatting Your Hard Disk"
  75.  
  76. 5. Restart Setup. To do so, insert Setup Disk 1 in drive 
  77.    A or drive B, and then type the following at the command 
  78.    prompt:
  79.  
  80.    A:SETUP
  81.  
  82.    or
  83.  
  84.    B:SETUP
  85.  
  86. 6. After you configure your hard disk, copy the files you 
  87.    saved in step 3 back to the disk.
  88.  
  89. Procedure 2  To remove OS/2 and save the data on your 
  90. computer:
  91.  
  92. NOTE If you have a version of OS/2 other than version 2.0, 
  93. the names of the OS/2 files and directories on your 
  94. hard disk may differ from those that appear in this 
  95. procedure.
  96.  
  97. CAUTION Do not remove MS-DOS program files from your computer. 
  98.  
  99. 1.  Back up the data files you want to keep onto floppy 
  100.     disks or a network drive.
  101.  
  102. 2.  If your Setup disks are compatible with drive A, insert
  103.     Setup Disk 1 in drive A, and then restart your computer by
  104.     pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL. After Setup displays the first
  105.     screen, press F3 twice to quit Setup.
  106.  
  107.     If your Setup disks are not compatible with drive A,
  108.     create a startup disk for drive A. To do so, insert 
  109.     Setup Disk 1 in drive B, and then type the following 
  110.     at the command prompt: 
  111.    
  112.     B:SETUP /F
  113.  
  114.     When prompted, choose to install MS-DOS on the floppy disk
  115.     in drive A. After Setup is finished, leave the startup disk 
  116.     in drive A, and then restart your computer by pressing 
  117.     CTRL+ALT+DEL.
  118.  
  119. 3.  Make drive C current by typing the following at the command 
  120.     prompt:
  121.  
  122.     C:
  123.  
  124. 4.  One by one, make each of the OS/2 directories and 
  125.     subdirectories current by using the CD command, and 
  126.     then delete all the files in them by using the DEL 
  127.     command. For example, to make the SYSTEM subdirectory in
  128.     the OS2 directory current and delete all the files in it, 
  129.     type the following at the command prompt:
  130.    
  131.     CD \OS2\SYSTEM
  132.     DEL *.*
  133.  
  134. 5.  After you have deleted all files in these subdirectories, 
  135.     delete the subdirectories by using the RD command. For 
  136.     example, to delete the SYSTEM subdirectory in the OS2 
  137.     directory on drive C, type:
  138.  
  139.     RD C:\OS2\SYSTEM
  140.  
  141. 6.  After you have deleted all subdirectories in the OS2, 
  142.     PSFONTS, SPOOL, NOWHERE, and OS!2_2.0_D directories, 
  143.     delete all files in these directories by using the DEL 
  144.     command.
  145.  
  146. 7.  Delete the OS2, PSFONTS, SPOOL, NOWHERE, and OS!2_2.0_D 
  147.     directories by using the RD command.
  148.  
  149. 8.  Move to another disk or directory all the OS/2 files in 
  150.     your root directory except the following:
  151.  
  152.     EA DATA.SF
  153.     OS2lDR.MSG
  154.     OS2lDR
  155.     OS2KRNl
  156.     OS2BOOT
  157.     WP DATA. SF
  158.  
  159. 9.  Change to the root directory by typing the following at the
  160.     command prompt:
  161.     
  162.     CD\
  163.  
  164. 10. Change the attributes of the five files listed 
  165.     in step 8 by typing the following at the command
  166.     prompt:
  167.  
  168.     A:\ATTRIB -H -S -R C:\E*.*
  169.     A:\ATTRIB -H -S -R C:\O*.*
  170.     A:\ATTRIB -H -S -R C:\W*.*
  171.  
  172. 11. Delete the files whose attributes you changed by typing 
  173.     the following at the command prompt:
  174.  
  175.     DEL E*.*
  176.     DEL O*.*
  177.     DEL W*.*
  178.  
  179. 12. Return to the root directory the files that you moved in 
  180.     step 8.
  181.  
  182. 13. Remove disks from all floppy disk drives, and then restart 
  183.     your computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
  184.  
  185. 14. Insert Setup Disk 1 in drive A or drive B.
  186.  
  187. 15. Run Setup again by typing the following at the command prompt:
  188.  
  189.     A:SETUP
  190.  
  191.     or
  192.  
  193.     B:SETUP
  194.  
  195. If You Have OS/2 Boot Manager Without DOS
  196. -----------------------------------------
  197.  
  198. To remove OS/2 and save the data on your hard disk:
  199.  
  200. 1. Back up the data files you want to keep onto floppy 
  201.    disks or a network drive by using the COPY command.
  202.    
  203. 2. Reinsert Setup Disk 1 in drive A (the startup drive).
  204.  
  205. 3. Restart your computer by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.
  206.  
  207. 4. When Setup displays the screen about OS/2 or non-
  208.    MS-DOS files, choose to remove OS/2 or the files. 
  209.  
  210. 5. After you finish setting up MS-DOS, copy the data files 
  211.    you saved in step 1 back to your hard disk.
